The International Day of Biodiversity

On May 22, we celebrate Biodiversity Day worldwide. This important day was declared by the United Nations in 2000 to raise awareness about the value and importance of biodiversity.

This year's theme is 'From agreement to action: build back biodiversity'. In a previous blog post, we discussed what biodiversity is and why it is essential. Now we would like to take this opportunity to tell you a little more about the thought behind this day and why this day is so important this year.

De Dag van de Biodiversiteit

The value of biodiversity

Biodiversity refers to the variety of plants, animals and microorganisms that exist on Earth, as well as the ecosystems in which they live. It encompasses the huge variety of genes, species and ecosystems that support our planet.

The United Nations has declared May 22 as International Biodiversity Day to draw attention to declining biodiversity and the urgency to conserve and protect it. The aim is to raise awareness of the value of biodiversity, the threats it faces and the need to take action to conserve it.

Biodiversity plays an essential role in maintaining the health of ecosystems and providing important ecosystem services, such as pollinating crops, purifying water and regulating climate patterns. Biodiversity loss has global consequences, including habitat loss, ecosystem degradation and species extinction.

While there is increasing recognition of the global importance of biological diversity for future generations, the number of species is significantly reduced by human activities. Celebrating this day encourages individuals, organizations and governments to take actions that conserve and protect biodiversity. This can range from creating and protecting natural areas, promoting sustainable land use, mitigating the impact of climate change to supporting conservation and restoration programs for endangered species.

From agreement to action: build back biodiversity

Did you know that 1 million animal and plant species are currently threatened with extinction? The loss of biodiversity is therefore a major problem that requires worldwide attention.

This year is an even more special year when it comes to preserving biodiversity. There is a sense of hope with the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, a historic agreement signed in December 2022 that sets targets and concrete actions to curb the loss of nature by 2050. You can find more information about the agreement here.

That is why this year's theme is "From agreement to action: build back biodiversity". The slogan emphasizes that now that we have a global action plan, we must implement all the measures included in the agreement before 2030. Only in this way can we achieve protected and sustainable biological diversity by 2050.

Sustainable disposables with FSC® quality mark

At TakeAware you will find a wide range of disposables that carry the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®) quality mark. This quality mark stands for responsible forest management and aims to preserve and restore biodiversity in forest areas. This includes protecting fragile ecosystems, preserving habitats for endangered species and ensuring the genetic diversity of trees and plants. In this way, deforestation is prevented at the same time, which is important to reduce CO2 emissions and combat climate change.

Many of our paper, cardboard and wooden disposables contain the FSC® quality mark. Are you curious about these products? Take a quick look at our paper, cardboard or wooden disposables and also contribute to preserving biodiversity!
