Why is choosing the right paper bag size important?
The size determines more than just how many products fit inside the bag. The width of the base is also important. Especially with takeaway orders, you want meal containers, salad bowls and other packaging to sit as flat as possible inside the bag.
If the base is too narrow, containers may sit at an angle. This increases the risk of sauce or dressing coming into contact with the lid or different packages sliding against each other. A bag with sufficient depth also makes it easier to place several products next to each other.
So do not choose a bag based on height alone. Pay particular attention to the width, depth and dimensions of the packaging that needs to fit inside.
How do you read the dimensions of a paper bag?
The size of a paper bag usually consists of three measurements: width, side gusset and height. A bag measuring 22 + 10 × 28 cm is therefore approximately 22 cm wide, 10 cm deep and 28 cm high. For bags with a side gusset, the dimensions are generally shown as width, gusset and height.
The side gusset determines how much space the bag has when opened out. For food packaging, this is an important part of the dimensions. A meal container may be narrower than the bag itself but may still not fit properly if the base is not deep enough.
If you are unsure, first measure the width and depth of your largest piece of packaging. Leave a little extra space as well, so you can easily place the order inside the bag and remove it again.

The table is intended as a guideline. The shape of your packaging ultimately determines which size works best. A round bowl, for example, uses the available space differently from a rectangular meal box.
What paper weight do you need?
In addition to the dimensions, the weight of the paper also plays a role. Paper weight is expressed in grams per square metre. The range includes bags made from 70 gsm, 80 gsm and 90 gsm paper, as well as a special pizza bag made from 110 gsm paper. In general, heavier paper provides greater strength.
For lightweight sandwiches or smaller products, a lighter bag may be sufficient. For larger meals and heavier orders, a sturdier bag is usually a better choice. However, carrying capacity is not determined by paper weight alone. The construction, base, handles and way the bag is packed also play an important role.
Always test a new size with a complete order. Lift the bag, carry it for a short distance and check whether the base, sides and handles remain sturdy.
Should you choose kraft, white or a customized bag?
In addition to size and strength, the appearance of the paper bag also matters. You can choose a kraft or white version, or a bag with a standard print.
