One of the most environmentally friendly materials from which our friendly disposables are made is sugarcane, also known as bagasse. Sugarcane is nowadays widely used for various packaging and disposables. For example for menu boxes, plates and chips trays. These sugarcane disposables are biodegradable.
How are sugarcane disposables made?
Sugarcane is grown in several countries and grows very fast. Harvesting can often take place every six months. The bagasse is supposedly bio-waste from the sugarcane plantations that have been set up for other purposes. Bagasse is the waste from sugarcane plants that remains after the sugar has been extracted from the plants. Instead of throwing away or burning the sugarcane stalks, the pulp is turned into a paper-like substance. Bagasse can be molded into a variety of shapes and products that are perfect for food packaging.
What are the benefits of sugarcane products?
Bagasse waste is often burned in the fields and causes pollution when not used. Another big advantage for the environment is that the production of sugarcane disposables is a lot more energy efficient than the production of plastic products. By using bagasse products, you help reduce pollution and energy consumption.
Sugarcane products are plant-based and can biodegrade in 90 days under the right conditions. Plastic, on the other hand, takes no less than 400 years to break down! The rate of degradation of bagasse depends on composting conditions; the temperature, turnover rate, humidity, etc. Shredding bagasse before composting speeds up the process considerably.
