By now, almost everyone is aware of the new SUP legislation that came into effect on July 3rd. This law was introduced to combat plastic pollution, including the plastic soup in our oceans. One of the measures taken was to ban plastic disposable cutlery. For many entrepreneurs, this was a wake-up call, but fortunately, there are plenty of sustainable alternatives on the market. In this article, we will tell you more about these sustainable options and their benefits.
What are the alternatives to plastic disposable cutlery?
As previously mentioned, there are plenty of sustainable alternatives to plastic disposable cutlery. Everyone knows about wooden and cardboard knives, forks, and spoons, but did you know that there is disposable cutlery made from bamboo and sugarcane? These materials are less well-known, but they have many advantages!
Bamboo disposable cutlery
Bamboo is a plant species that grows incredibly quickly. Every year, the plant produces new stems that shoot up rapidly. To make products from these stems, the hollow stalks are cut into rectangular and flat strips. These strips are joined together while retaining the natural grain structure. Bamboo is strong, hard, and lightweight, making it suitable for many different disposables, including cutlery. One major advantage of bamboo cutlery is that it feels extremely pleasant in your mouth compared to wood and cardboard. Additionally, there is no flavor transfer. Bamboo cutlery is completely plastic-free and 100% biodegradable.

Sugarcane disposable cutlery
Sugarcane (pulp) is a natural waste product and is therefore also called bagasse, derived from the Spanish word for waste. Our sugarcane products are made from the pulp that remains after the juice is separated from the sugarcane. The pulp is compressed and molded into the disposables you see in our virtual shelves using heat and pressure. Sugarcane is the perfect material to use for cutlery. Like bamboo, it provides a pleasant feeling in your mouth and there is no flavor transfer. Sugarcane cutlery is also 100% plastic-free and biodegradable.
